Bree Street Parklet

This is a new parklet designed to create outdoor seating area for I Love the Dough, a popular pizza restaurant in Cape Town’s bustling Bree Street. The project was funded by Pernod Ricard and facilitated by Design Indaba, as part of a broader project by the parties to find innovative new ways of marketing via urban acupuncture. The project is almost entirely built using locally-sourced, cross-laminated-timber (CLT), which is a relatively unexplored construction technology in South Africa. The project is notable in that it is the first product of Cape Town’s new parklets policy, which is designed to promote more human-centric utilization of parking spaces in the downtown area.
