This is a new exhibition and office building for National Ceramic Industries, which is the largest tile manufacturer in Africa. The project is sited on highly-unstable soil conditions, owing in part to an adjacent water-storage dam. The new building replaces a previous building which was condemned due to excessive structural cracking. Our design improvesd on the previous plan, by granting all office spaces access to north light, as well as views of the dam and mountains beyond. The southern wall of the new building provided an opportunity to showcase a range of colours and sizes of porcelain tiles manufactured on-site. The brief called for an extensive landscape design, which included a new meandering footpath, which connects a series of pause spaces around the perimeter of the building.
