City Building is a 134-unit apartment building located in Jeppestown, Johannesburg. The project has a substantial new-build component which had to be co-ordinated with the heritage restoration of the Jooste and Bryant building, built in 1906. The massing of the new building therefore steps from six-storeys to three, at the connection with the heritage building. The project site is a Z-shape, snaking through a built-up Johannesburg block. This allowed for the creation of communal courtyards at inflection points in the building plan. The project is recognisable for its various surface textures, achieved by using a variety of brick types and paint finishes. The project has a number of different unit types, the most popular being the 27 m2 loft units and the 33 m2 3-bed cluster units.
