This is the first of five projects Local Studio has undertaken for the South African tile retailer, CTM. The project called for more efficient use of structural steel than the retailer had historically used on their projects. By introducing a single clerestory window complemented by regular skylights, we were able to reduce steel costs while maintaining the required daylighting levels. Despite CTM being our main client, this project also involved the design of an adjacent new store for Italtile, which is a sister company to CTM. New-build warehouses such as these require intensive co-ordination with civil engineers, to ensure that truck deliveries and stormwater remain practical. Added to this is an emphasis by the retailer on new soft landscaped areas.
