The Gordon Institute of Business Science in Johannesburg has been a client of Local Studio for several years. The original campus buildings, designed by Henri Comrie in the 1990’s and 2000’s have required updating and renovation, to respond to changing needs in the business education landscape. The Co-Central project was an interior fitout of an existing 200m2 space at the heart of the GIBS East Block. The project was initially designed as a flexible conference venue, which could host one large event or two separate events when two large, acoustically-sealed walls slide into place. The space has since become the home of the GIBS media centre. Apart from a careful custom metal-ceiling design which handled acoustic and task lighting requirements, the vertical perimeter walls were all clad in illuminated polycarbonate panels, which light up in different colours.
