This is a private lodge built on the 60,000 Ha Lapalala Wilderness reserve. The client brief for this project called for a simple, low-maintenance building to be constructed from masonry and local rock. The building program includes a public area, seven residential suites and a yoga studio. Despite a relatively tight budget, we were able to introduce fine hardwood skirting details as well as sloped marine ply ceilings, which are a distinct departure from other lodges and service buildings already completed on the reserve. This project benefitted greatly from a landscape design by Tim Steyn, which connected and complemented the overall masterplan.
