Tighy Park is a component of a larger non-motorized transport framework that Local Studio were commissioned to design and implement in the suburbs of Westdene and Sophiatown in Johannesburg. The initial route laid out by transport engineers had skirted past the park, which was previously a large unkempt field. By rerouting the masterplan, we were able to consolidate a large portion of the project budget on a new programmed linear public space. The park includes a new children’s play area on one end and a skatepark on the other end. One important learning on the project, was that local skateboarders should have been consulted on the park design, the failures of which only became evident after completion.
